Does Protein Powder Expire?

Protein Powder

Protein is one of the most vital dietary fibers that contribute in the build up of a body. It is a known fact that eggs, rice, soy, whey and milk are important sources of protein along with many other types of foods. The majority of bodybuilders all over the world depend on protein supplements that come in the form of protein powder. In fact, all those who are involved in activities that require a good deal of physical exertion depend on protein powders as a supplement to their diet. These protein powders are consumed with liquid substances such as milk or juice. They come in different flavors to satisfy the taste glands. An often asked question is that whether protein powders expire and it goes without doubt to mention that they do!

It should be noted that protein is an organic compound and as a result of which the breakdown it suffers is spontaneous. But protein takes a relatively larger period of time to breakdown completely unlike other compounds. A lot depends on the storage of the protein powder which requires certain short and simple methods. If the container in which the protein powder is stored is not closed properly, the powder gets oxidized and thus becomes devoid of its essential nutritional value. Protein does not decay as such. But as it decomposes, it loses all the nutritional value. The intake of protein powder, after the decomposition takes place, is of no use.

It must be stated without doubt that the company sets the time of expiry depending on the shell-life of protein. Following this the powder expires. It may not spoil but will certainly lose all its values and, hence, the intake should be discontinued. There are certain precautions, which if followed, will keep the nutritional value of the protein powder intact for a longer period. The lid of the container should be put on tightly so as to prevent water from coming in contact with the powder. The container should also be kept away from heat.

One more fact that should be taken into account is that some of the protein powders, especially the whey protein, are punched with fats so as to lend it a good flavor. Adding fat also makes up for the nutritional part. Under such circumstances, the powder acquires a tendency to expire faster as fats decompose faster than proteins. While in general, the protein powders cover a span of around two or three years, in case of addition of fats, the period of life goes down by a great deal. While the protein part stays intact for a certain period after the date of expiry, the fat part decomposes and hence it is better to stop consuming the powder.

One significant conclusion that can be drawn is that that the protein powders do expire. Used worldwide by the bodybuilders as a supplement to regular diet, protein powders have now become a widely saleable commodity and for this very reason some protein powders, like that of the whey protein, are made by adding fats that tend to decompose faster thereby leading to a fast expiry. It is advisable to check the date of expiry before buying the product because protein remains more potent when fresh. The nutritional value starts diminishing with its age. Following certain precautions can increase the span during which the protein powder remains effective. It just requires keeping the powder away from air and heat, as in presence of both it decomposes faster. Therefore it goes without saying that the faster the protein powder is consumed the more effective and better it is.
